Last night, while checking on the vegetables on the porch, I noticed a swallowtail butterfly bumping against the window, as though trying to peer inside.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So butterflies do the same thing moths do, I thought, rather impressed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWant to come in? Hmm?\u201d I held out my hand, and it climbed right on.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a moment, a thought crossed my mind: How much longer does this little fellow have?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell then, coming in?\u201d I opened the door. It flew in, fluttering around the long fluorescent-light cover.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I went downstairs to get my camera. When I came back, it was gone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then, to my surprise, I heard myself calling, \u201cButterfly? Butterfly?\u201d And in such a sad voice, too. I was worried. What if it died because I had let it inside?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There I was, actually searching for it, calling, \u201cButterfly? Butterfly?\u201d Not singing the song. Really calling for it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I found it\u2014on the ceiling.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do you manage to hang there upside down like that?\u201d<\/strong> It opened and closed its wings a few times, then folded them and became perfectly still.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSpending the night here, are you?\u201d I left the light on and went downstairs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tomorrow, I must remember to let it out.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could this be the same swallowtail that perched on the cucumber plant on my birthday?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I stuck a Post-it on my phone with one word written on it: BUTTERFLY.   <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

                      *******<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next morning I went upstairs and there it was, fluttering its wings by the door. It remembered the way it had got in. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWant to get out, don\u2019t you?\u201d I opened the door and out it flew. I got out, stood on the porch and saw it vanish behind the house.     <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
