この「瓶」は細口瓶ではなく「広口瓶」で、英語ではよく知られたナゾ

　　When is a door not a door?（ドアがドアでなくなるときは？」

と、その答え、

　　When it is ajar.

のajar「ドアが少し開いた」に掛けたa jar「広口瓶」が有名だ。

　もうひとつ有名なのがcookie jar「クッキージャー」で、ネイティブは次のやり取り遊びを子供時代に通過する。

A: Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
B: YOU stole the cookie from the cookie jar!
A: Who, me?
B: Yes, you!
A: Couldn’t be.
B: Then who? このあとAはBあるいはCを指差して、
A: YOU stole the cookie from the cookie jar! とゲームは続く。

もっと小さいものもあり、キッチンに置かれる。
　そこから家族が１枚２枚と盗み食いするイメージから、

　　have one’s hand in the cookie jar

というイディオムがあり、「自分の地位や状況を利用して不正な利益を得る」という意味になる。例えば

　　Several people have their hands in the cookie jar.「不正な利益を得ている者が何人もいる」

あるいは、捕まった場合には

　　They got caught with their hands in the cookie jar.「彼らは不正の現場を押さえられた」

のように使える。
