A Sunset to Remember

氷河glacierから派生した形容詞glacialは、氷河の動きに似た微々たる速度で進む、言い換えれば遅々として進まぬ様子をextremely slowという意味で表します。

　　・make glacial progress
　　・at a glacial pace

のようなフレーズで、

　　・The cleanup after the earthquake is making glacial progress.

　　・Negotiations between the two countries are moving at a glacial pace.

これは、また一輪、夜に開くカラスウリの花ですが。

今回は植物をダメにするという意味の「枯らす」の話。英語では以前にも取り上げたkillという動詞。動植物両用で、例えばこんな風に使います。

「絶対枯れない花８種」とでも。
you can’t killは「枯らそうとしても枯れない」という気持ち。

今日、冬に枯らしたと思っていたカラー・リリーcalla lilyが生き返ってる姿を発見。

I thought I killed it last winter but it’s bounced back and started growing again. I never knew it had such a strong root system!

ギリシャ語の「kallos（美）」が語源とある。尼僧の着る服の「襟」collarという説も。

酷暑が過ぎたころ、待っていたようにピーマンの花がどんどん咲いて小ぶりの実をつけ始めた。
景気などが上向き状態のことをto be looking upで表すことができる。そこで、

　　The green pepper harvest is looking up.

と言える。見よ、数個の実が、覚えてくれと言わんばかりに上を向いている！　

　という訳で、実のある話になったなら幸い。言い換えに、

　　The green pepper harvest is picking up.

がある。

姉からお茶が送られて来た。例によってイラスト付きで。

このお茶は化学肥料・殺虫剤等不使用とあり無茶苦茶有り難し。百万円積まれても手放しません。これを英語で言いたければ、円をドルに替えて、

　　I wouldn’t give it away for a million dollars.

　そして、これも定番のfor all the tea in China「中国のお茶全部を積まれても・と交換でも」を使って、

　　I wouldn’t give it away for all the tea in China.

と言うこともできます。スケールの大きい定番表現としては、

　　I wouldn’t miss their concert for (all) the world.

があります。このnot for X (in Y)のパターンをひとひねりすれば、独自の新鮮な表現が出来あがります。試験ではアウトでしょうが、試験以外なら、微笑む方もいるでしょう。

　　I wouldn’t do it for all the pasta in Italy.
　　I wouldn’t go there for all the curry in India.
　　I wouldn’t work for that company again for all the potatoes in Idaho.

　日本を知っている人には、

　　I wouldn’t accept it for all the matcha in Japan.
　　I wouldn’t join the team for all the apples in Aomori.
　　I wouldn’t change it for all the rice in Niigata.

これらの例は全て「たとえ・・・と交換にと言われても・・・しない」という「たとえ話」なので、仮定を表すwouldn’tがよく使われます。

　コーヒー好きのぼくは、

　　I wouldn’t quit my blog for all the coffee in Kona.　

と、頭韻まで踏んで頑張ることもできます。しかし、全てのコナコーヒーを積んでくれるなら、止めてもよいこな。(^_^)

Last night, while checking on the vegetables on the porch, I noticed a swallowtail butterfly bumping against the window, as though trying to peer inside.

So butterflies do the same thing moths do, I thought, rather impressed.

“Want to come in? Hmm?” I held out my hand, and it climbed right on.

For a moment, a thought crossed my mind: How much longer does this little fellow have?

“Well then, coming in?” I opened the door. It flew in, fluttering around the long fluorescent-light cover.

I went downstairs to get my camera. When I came back, it was gone.

And then, to my surprise, I heard myself calling, “Butterfly? Butterfly?” And in such a sad voice, too. I was worried. What if it died because I had let it inside?

There I was, actually searching for it, calling, “Butterfly? Butterfly?” Not singing the song. Really calling for it.

Then I found it—on the ceiling.

“How do you manage to hang there upside down like that?” It opened and closed its wings a few times, then folded them and became perfectly still.

“Spending the night here, are you?” I left the light on and went downstairs.

Tomorrow, I must remember to let it out.

Could this be the same swallowtail that perched on the cucumber plant on my birthday?

I stuck a Post-it on my phone with one word written on it: BUTTERFLY.

The next morning I went upstairs and there it was, fluttering its wings by the door. It remembered the way it had got in.

“Want to get out, don’t you?” I opened the door and out it flew. I got out, stood on the porch and saw it vanish behind the house.     

夜ベランダで野菜のチェック中、アゲハが１羽、窓から中をのぞき込むようにガラスに体をぶつけている。蝶も蛾と同じことをするのだなと感じ入りつつ、中へ入りたいか、どう、と手を差し伸べると乗ってくる。一瞬、余命いくばく？と思う。さ、入る？　とドアを開けると、中に入って、長い蛍光灯のカバーのまわりを舞う。カメラを取りに下へ行き、戻るといない。なんと、チョウチョ、チョウチョと、自分がアゲハを呼んでいる。それも悲しそうな声で。中に入れたために死んでしまったらどうしようと心配しているのだ。驚いた、チョウチョ、チョウチョと探している。唄うのではなくて。
　天井にいた。逆さになってよく停まれるね。すこし羽を開閉し、閉じて動かなくなった。ここでお泊まりか。明かりをつけたまま、階下へ。明日忘れずに外に出すぞ。あれは、誕生日にキュウリに停まっていたアゲハかな。
　携帯に「蝶」と書いたポストイットを貼って、お休みなさい。

バックヤード、オッケー？　ワタバウベランダ、ノー？　I hope this is untrue.

知人より拝領したお団子。保存料などナシで実に自然な美味。
そして、添えられた栞の出だしが

　このあと美事な社是が展開します。

　英国の戯曲She Stoops to Conquer 『負けるが勝ち』から生まれたのが

　　stoop to conquer 「身をかがめて勝利する・負かす、負けて勝つ」

というイディオムですが、まさにこの団子製造元のキャッチは

　　They stoop to conquer.

と言えるかもしれません。団子一徹、団子たる姿勢。ごちそうさまでした。
