いにしえのリドルはライムの形をとったものが多い。たとえば、

この物はむさぼる何もかも
鳥も　獣も　木も　花も

と無理尾訳は和風ながら脚韻を踏ませている。
それはそれとして、韻を踏むなぞなぞは作る側も解く側も努力を要するばかりか、物語性があり、時に死をかけたものさえある。たとえばあのスフィンクスがオイディプスにかけた謎。そしてこのリドルはThe Lord of the Ringsで、ホビットのBilbo Bagginsが、あの執拗なGollumに挑まれたもの。答えは解ったものの（！）、正答しても誤答であっても死が待つことを感じた彼は、What’s in my pocket?と逆にGollumに尋ねながら手をポケットに入れ、中に隠し持っていた指輪をはめて透明となり危機を脱する。さてBilboが解いたというこのリドルの答えは？

頂いた蕗の薹。湯通しし、しらすを落とし、ポン酢かけ、苦み味わう春の幸せ。

ところで、しらすはbaby sardine（イワシの稚魚）という定訳がある。稚魚を表す語には他にfryがあり、（時代物にはYou small fry!「この稚魚めが！」と相手を見下す表現があるが、それはそれとして）fry of sardineと表すこともできる。sardine fryというとイワシのフライのイメージが強い。こういうことをしらすのも良いかなというか、しらすべくしてしらすたようなところもあるが、ただのlittle fishと言ってすまし、質問があれば答えるのも悪くないだろう。

久しぶりに降りた江ノ電の長谷。海側の踏切横にあるのがこのレトロのポスト。
