同じブランドの缶や瓶がsix packに詰めて売られているのが定番のビール。それをあれこれブランドを単品で買えるという、日本なら常識の販売法を”編み出した”スーパーの文句がライムしていて面白い。「おしゃれなrhyming」というタイトルで、コロラド州在住ひろみさんか送ってくれました。

シングル（単品）でミングル（皆とワイワイ）してみよう！　という手書きの誘いです。
その下の小さな文句にも頑張りが見える。

ですが、これがばら売りとなると、パックの缶の値段と変わるのかどうか、そのあたりも興味が湧きます。

育てているナスの話を際に、同じ疑問が英語でも起こります。

答えは和英同じで、ナス全体は
　　和：ナスの木
　　英：eggplant tree

ぼくはナスの木が２本あるので
　　I have two eggplant trees.
そこから今日３個採ったので、
　　I picked three eggplants today.

今年は立葵に元気がなく、今頃になって芽を出し若葉をわずかに伸ばすものもいて、数メートルに伸びて咲き誇ったあの初夏が嘘のようです。そこで、何だか思い出したのがこの歌で、前回の風の話に触発された部分もあり、何とか英語に韻付きで訳してみました。

When the wind’s in the east, mine old plum tree.

昨日取り上げた風のライムには、釣り人・漁師バージョンがある。

　blows bait in their mouth.

ここでも西風がベストとある。
天気は西から東へ移動するから西風は時に悪天候をもたらす。
それを察知した魚はいまのうちに食べておこうと焦る。
台風前にスーパーが賑わうのと同じ理屈か。
というわけで西風の中の釣りはベストということになる。

韻で覚える大漁予想。

春は蒲公英　The dandelion’s for spring.

夏は日陰　The shade for summer.

このお馴染みのことわざを英語にしてみました。

Summer’s heat and winter’s freeze
the equinox helps appease.

天候関連のことわざ。英語には大変有名な「夕焼けは船乗りに良し、朝焼けは船乗りに悪し」があります。

Red sky at night, sailor’s delight.
Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.

こうしたライミングを使ったものこそ覚えやすく、愛唱されるわけで、その他、「草に露あらば雨の来ることなし」

When dew is on the grass,
rain will never come to pass.

さらに「カエルの沼で鳴けば、雨じきに降る」

Frogs croaking in the lagoon
means rain will come real soon.

どうしてもlagoonなのでしょうか。そうです、とsoon。
最後は風向きのライムで結果を占ってみてください。
