今月はThailand Adventureです。

昨日は主人公夫妻がスワンナプーム国際空港に着陸し、入国手続きに入るという場面でしたが、そこで「入国審査」、「税関」に関して次のやり取りがありました。

H: Let’s hope we clear immigration and customs quickly.(入国審査と税関はさっと通過するよう祈るとしよう)
S:  There’s passport control up ahead.（この先が入国審査よ）

「入国審査」には、immigrationとpassport controlという言い方があります。「税関」はcustomsです。

これらの語の使い方に共通するのは定冠詞のthe が付いていないことです。

passport controlをネットのLongman辞典をチェックすると、
[uncountable]
It took us ages to get through passport control.

定義では、[uncountable]不可算だとしています。「私たちが入国審査を通過するのに延々とかかった」という例文でもget through passport controlとthe 抜きです。他の辞書の定義も同様です。

これは、正確にはthe passport control counter/checkpointなどと表すことができますが、会話のためにpassport controlに略したと考えることができます。the immigration counter/checkpoint、the customs counter/checkpointにも同じことが言えます。

このthe 抜きの形は大変便利で、上のやり取りのＨが使っているように入国審査の「手続き」を表すこともできますし、Ｓのように入国審査をする「場所」を表すこともできるのです。

空港で旅行者の手荷物や携帯品をチェックするsecurityもthe security inspection counterなどの略と考えられます。これで「保安検査」と「保安検査場」のどちらも表すことができます。

what you do at the airport:When you arrive at the airport, you go into the terminal building. You check in for your flight at the check-in desk. You show your passport at passport control and then go through security, where they check that you are not carrying any weapons. If you have time you can wait for your flight in the departure lounge. When your flight is called, you go through the departure gate in order to get onto the plane. The plane then takes off from the runway. After your plane has landed, you go to the baggage reclaim to collect your bags, then go through customs and immigration, where they check your passport and your bags. You then go out into the arrivals area.
